Summer Work Travel in the United States

Summer Work & Travel USA(SWT)

1.Program Overview

Summer Work & Travel USA (SWT) is a cultural exchange program regulated by the U.S. Department of State for eligible university students studying outside the United States. During their summer vacation, participants can undertake paid seasonal or temporary work in the United States, interact with local residents and young people from around the world, and experience American life and culture.

Cultural exchange is at the heart of the program, which combines short-term work, everyday life, and travel. Participants earn income to help cover part of their expenses in the United States while gaining experience in independent living and cross-cultural communication.

2. Program Duration

SWT takes place during the university summer vacation and allows participation for up to four months. Exact dates depend on the applicable arrangements for that year, the student's academic calendar, and the program documents. Participants must return to their home country before their university term begins. See the program duration information.

After successfully completing the program, participants generally have a 30-day travel and departure preparation period to settle personal affairs and travel within the United States. Working is not permitted during this period. The arrangements for successful completion do not apply if the program has been terminated.

3. Placements and Pay

Placements are commonly found in amusement parks, resorts, hotels, food service, and retail settings. Duties may include guest services, food service, cashiering, and retail sales. Available placements depend on the current program offerings and approval by the relevant U.S. parties.

Roles vary in their duties, locations, English language requirements, and physical demands. When considering a placement, you should also review accommodation options, commuting arrangements, and the local cost of living.

Confirm the pay rate, agreed working hours, pay schedule, and accommodation and transportation arrangements before accepting a placement. Employers should provide the agreed hours and comply with applicable wage and overtime requirements.

Earnings can help cover some living or travel expenses, but income and savings depend on working hours, taxes, accommodation costs, and personal spending. Recovering all program costs or achieving a fixed amount of savings cannot be guaranteed. Participants should prepare a realistic budget and have reserve funds available.

4. What You Can Gain

Experience Everyday American Culture

From work to community life, discover how local people live, learn about cultural differences through conversation, and share your own culture and experiences.

5. Eligibility

Applicants generally need to meet the following basic requirements:

- Be enrolled full-time at an accredited, classroom-based post-secondary educational institution outside the United States and have completed at least one semester or its equivalent.

- Have sufficient English communication skills to function in an English-speaking work and living environment.

- Be interested in cultural exchange and willing to participate in the program's screening and interview process.

- Be able to complete the program within the university vacation period and return in time for classes.

Specific admission criteria are subject to the U.S. program sponsor and the requirements of the current program.

We also encourage applicants to bring a responsible and positive attitude to work, basic independent living skills, respect for cultural differences, and a willingness to communicate and adapt.

Follow placement and check-in requirements. Complete the required arrival check-in and promptly report changes in your address or employment. A replacement or additional job must be vetted and confirmed by the sponsor before you start. See the placement approval and reporting requirements.
